Principles of Great Home Design

HomeBlogPrinciples of Great Home Design

Our team at Zar Custom Homes has extensive experience in the home design business, and we have seen examples of great design work, poor design work, and everything in between. We want to help all of our clients create their ideal homes, and achieving that goal starts with the same key design principles. In this article, we’ll go over some of the principles of great home design so that you can get a peek at our process.

Principles of Great Home Design

  • Flow. One of the key principles of great home design is flow, or how easy it is to move from one space to another. In a well-designed home, you should be able to navigate through the different rooms without having to backtrack, meaning that there shouldn’t be any dead-end rooms or bottlenecks. Our team has the right experience to design a new home or addition that allows easy, free movement from one space to the next.
  • Use of Space. Another key to great home design is using the space effectively. In our years in the industry, we’ve seen small spaces used to incredible effect, and enormous spaces used disastrously. When we design homes, we make sure that as much space as possible is being put to effective use, and that we waste as little as we can. One situation that illustrates this problem well is a kitchen with an overly large island–does the homeowner need that much counter space that it justifies dominating the whole room? Or is it just impeding the traffic in and out for nothing?
  • Ease of Maintenance. A third principle of great home design is how easy it is to use and maintain. Remember that you’ll be living here for many years, not just on move-in day, and that your pristine new home will someday need to be cleaned. That amethyst-geode sink might look luxurious and opulent, but do you want to have to scrub all those crystal crannies with a toothbrush to maintain that sparkle? Our team will make sure that your home is functional and beautiful for the long term.
